This month for Wednesdays @ 1, we will be hosting Ian Smith, author of 'For Love on Country', with his presentation: How much evidence is enough, and are all sources equal?

Ian Smith applies the investigative training and skills he acquired during twenty five years in law enforcement to his genealogical work. He tailors avenues of inquiry and pursues them in order to gather enough evidence to put each person’s name into print. But how much evidence is enough? Are all sources equal? How do you weigh the value of a source? In this talk he answers these questions in the context of solving complex genealogical puzzles while gathering the names of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from South Australia who have served the nation in peace and war since Federation.

Ian has been researching and writing about First Nations service personnel from South Australia for more than a dozen years. He particularly enjoys solving complex genealogical questions. He was involved in the fundraising for and building of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander War Memorial in the city, and is a co-chair of Aboriginal Veterans SA with Uncle Frank Lampard. In this role, he has been closely involved in locating and marking the graves of Aboriginal veterans around the state. Ian recently retired after a decade directing Anzac Day commemorations in the City of Adelaide. In what he loosely refers to as “spare time” Ian volunteers as an ambassador for Andrew Russell Veteran Living – the veteran homelessness service, speaking to community groups about its work.

A short Q&A will be available after the event, finishing at 1:45 pm. Please note, this session will be recorded, and all registrants will receive a link to the recording after the event.

Registrations close Wednesday 5 November, 9:00 am.
