Adelaide's Destitute Asylum housed the poor, elderly, sick, vulnerable, and rejected, providing gerontology, transition, and hospice services, as well as respite and maternity care. Join curator Corinne Ball as she talks about her decade of research into the sometimes difficult stories from South Australia's social welfare system, and the families who passed through it.
Corinne has been a curator at the History Trust of South Australia since 2013, and her research passion is uncovering the lives of Destitute Asylum residents. She has written two biographies of forgotten South Australians: the first is 'Three Ring Circus', which won the 2022 Keain Medal, and tells the tale of rebellious Mabel Worley, a 'strumpet, sinner, and circus star'. Her second book, about William Smith, Australia's famous Armless Artist, will be published in 2027 to mark the 100th anniversary of William's untimely death.
Please note, this session will be recorded, and all registrants will receive a link to the recording after the event. Registrations close Tuesday 3 February, 9:00 am
Wednesdays @ 1 and Twilight Talks are our alternating monthly seminar events. Free for members, these events focus on topics of interest to family historians, such as talks from archives and museums, presentations from historians or authors, or seminars from genealogical research subscription sites.
